Why Is Retrolife RT15 Record Player Not Spinning?

If your Retrolife T15 record player is not spinning, check the basic setup first. Most problems can be identified without opening the unit. Follow these steps in order.

1. Check the Playback Mode

Make sure the T15 is set to PHONO mode.

If the T15 is in CD, TAPE, Bluetooth, AM, or FM mode, the turntable will not operate.

  1. Turn on the T15.
  2. Select PHONO mode.
  3. Place a record on the platter.
  4. Move the tonearm toward the record and check whether the platter starts spinning.

If it still does not spin, continue to the next step.

2. Check the Power Connection

If the T15 does not power on at all.

  • Make sure the power adapter is securely connected.
  • Check that the wall outlet is working.
  • If you use a power strip, make sure it is switched on.
  • Turn the T15 off, wait briefly, and turn it back on.

If the T15 powers on but the platter does not spin, check the platter and belt.

3. Check the 7 Inch Platter Clip

When setting up the T15, check whether the platter has a small retaining clip securing it during shipping.

This clip must be removed before normal use.

Important, do not pull the clip out with your fingers if it is difficult to remove. Use a suitable tool to gently lift the clip upward.

After removing the clip.

  1. Remove the platter mat.
  2. Check the center spindle area.
  3. Locate the small retaining clip.
  4. Carefully lift the clip with a suitable tool.
  5. Remove the clip completely.
  6. Reinstall the platter mat.
  7. Check that the platter can rotate freely.

Do not force the clip or use excessive pressure, as this may damage the platter or surrounding components.

4. Check the Drive Belt

The platter belt can move out of position during shipping or transportation.

If you are comfortable checking the belt.

  1. Remove the platter mat.
  2. Carefully lift the platter from the spindle.
  3. Check the rubber belt underneath the platter.
  4. Make sure the belt is positioned around the inner rim of the platter.
  5. Check that the belt is also connected to the motor pulley.
  6. Reinstall the platter.
  7. Test the turntable again.

If the belt is broken, cracked, or excessively loose, contact Retrolife support for a replacement.

5. Check the Auto Stop Setting

If the platter starts and then stops unexpectedly, check the auto stop function.

Turn auto stop off and test the turntable again.

If the platter works normally with auto stop off, the issue may be related to the auto stop mechanism or record position.

6. Check the Tonearm

Make sure the tonearm is properly positioned.

  • Remove the stylus guard before playback.
  • Make sure the tonearm is not locked in its rest.
  • Use the cueing lever correctly.
  • Gently move the tonearm toward the record.
  • Do not force the tonearm or platter.

If the platter still does not start, move to the final check.
